Gagliano was one of the most important early opera composers -- he wrote several apart from Dafne that do not survive complete. He also wrote an oratorio, six books of 5-part madrigals, a volume of Musiche (monodies, secular duets and trios) and a quantity of sacred music including thirty-eight motets. La Dafne (Daphne) is an early Italian opera, written in by the Italian composer Marco da Gagliano from a libretto by Ottavio is described as a favola in musica (fable set to music) composed in one act and a prologue. The opera is based on the myth of Daphne and Apollo as related by Ovid in the first book of the earlier version of the libretto had been set to.
